The Department having been advised of the completion of the
United States Penitentiary for Utah, it is deemed proper, that in
conformity with the custom in such cases, there should be a thorough inspection of the building before its acceptance from the
contractor, the Pauly Jail Building and Manufacturing Company,
of St. Louis, Missouri, and I have to request that you will serve
as Chairman of a committee to make such examination, the other members of which will be the Surveyor General and the Secretary of
It is desired that the committee will make a careful and
thorough examination of the building with a view to ascertaining
whether or not it has been constructed in a workmanlike manner, of
the best materials, and in accordance with tho plans and specifications approved by the Department.
